What is a Mahadasha?
In Vedic astrology, a dasha system divides life into planetary periods. Vimshottari Dasha is among the most commonly used systems and begins from the Moon's birth Nakshatra. Each Mahadasha is associated with one planet and lasts for a defined span within the system.
This does not mean the planet controls every event during those years. It means themes connected with that planet and the houses it represents may become more relevant for interpretation.
What is an Antardasha?
An Antardasha is a smaller planetary period operating inside the Mahadasha. Think of the Mahadasha as the broader chapter and the Antardasha as a more specific section within it. Astrologers read the relationship between both planets rather than interpreting either in isolation.
Five things to check before interpreting a dasha
- House rulership: Which houses does the dasha planet rule for the Ascendant?
- Natal placement: Which house and sign contain the planet?
- Connections: Which planets aspect or join it?
- Divisional charts: Does a relevant varga such as Navamsa (D9) or Dashamsa (D10) add context?
- Current transits: Are Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu or Ketu activating the same houses or planets?
Why the same Mahadasha feels different for different people
A generic statement such as “Saturn Mahadasha causes problems” or “Jupiter Mahadasha brings success” skips the most important part: the birth chart. Saturn may rule different houses for different Ascendants, sit in a different house, receive different aspects and operate through a different Antardasha. Jupiter is equally chart-dependent.
Mahadasha for career and business
Career timing may involve the 10th, 6th, 2nd and 11th houses, their lords, the D10 chart and the active dasha. A period connected with these factors may be astrologically relevant, but job offers, compensation, skills and market conditions remain essential. Read how the 10th house is read for career and our job-change timing guide.
For entrepreneurs, dasha analysis can be considered alongside partnership, cash-flow and growth questions. See Business Astrology.
Mahadasha for marriage and relationships
Marriage analysis may connect the active periods with the 7th house and lord, Venus, Jupiter, Navamsa and other chart-specific factors. A dasha can contribute to timing analysis, but it is not an expiry date for marriage. See how to read the 7th house and Marriage Astrology.
How transits work with dasha
Dasha and transit answer different parts of a timing question. The dasha can describe which natal themes are active; transits describe the current movement of planets through the chart. When several independent factors point toward the same life area, an astrologer may give that theme more attention.

Do remedies change a Mahadasha?
Traditional remedies may be used as spiritual or reflective practices, but they should not be sold as guaranteed ways to erase a planetary period. Remedy choice is traditionally chart-specific. If you are considering gemstones or other paid remedies, avoid fear-based urgency and review suitability first. See Lal Kitab & Remedy Guidance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?
Mahadasha is the broader planetary period; Antardasha is a sub-period operating within it. They are read together with the natal chart.
Is Saturn or Rahu Mahadasha always bad?
No. Their interpretation depends on house rulership, placement, strength, planetary relationships and the rest of the horoscope.
Which is more important: dasha or transit?
Neither replaces the other. Dasha provides a planetary-period framework while transits add current timing context.
Can Mahadasha predict an exact event?
It can contribute to traditional timing analysis, but no single period should be treated as a guaranteed event.
A chart-specific consultation can connect dasha, divisional charts and transits to the question you are actually facing.
