Combust Planet (Asta): Meaning, Effects & Interpretation

A combust planet is often reduced to “weak” or “bad.” A useful reading is more precise: check its actual distance from the Sun, functional role, dignity, house placement and timing before deciding how it may operate.

Quick answer: In Vedic astrology, a planet is called combust or Asta when it comes very close to the Sun by zodiac longitude. The planet’s qualities may become less visible, more internal or closely tied to authority, identity and solar themes. Combustion does not erase the planet or guarantee failure; it must be read with the complete Kundali.

What does combustion mean in Jyotish?

The Sun is the brightest body in the sky. When another visible planet appears close to it, that planet becomes difficult to see in the Sun’s glare. Jyotish translates this astronomical proximity into a condition called Asta or combustion.

Traditional astrologers may interpret the planet as working behind the Sun, expressing with less independence, or becoming closely linked with confidence, authority, recognition and the person’s sense of purpose. These are interpretive themes—not a promise of a specific event.

How to check whether a planet is combust

  1. Find exact longitudes. Note the Sun and planet by sign, degree and minute in the D1 birth chart.
  2. Convert to one 360-degree circle. This prevents mistakes when the two bodies sit on opposite sides of a sign boundary.
  3. Measure the smallest separation. Compare that distance with the range used for the particular planet.
  4. Confirm motion and tradition. Some authorities and software apply different limits for Mercury or Venus when retrograde or direct.
  5. Interpret the complete chart. Add house ownership, dignity, aspects, conjunctions, dispositor and active Dasha.

Do not diagnose combustion from the printed house alone. Two planets can share a house yet be far apart by degree, or sit in adjoining signs and still be very close. Start with an accurately calculated Kundali.

Why you may see different combustion degree tables

Online tables do not always agree because classical sources and modern lineages can use different orbs, especially for Mercury and Venus. Their apparent motion and frequent closeness to the Sun make the calculation more nuanced. Rather than combining several tables, use one clearly stated method consistently and record the exact separation.

Important: A planet does not suddenly change from fully powerful to powerless at a single degree line. Many astrologers treat proximity as a spectrum: a very tight conjunction may be more noticeable than one near the outer boundary.

Which planets are usually assessed for combustion?

PlanetTheme to examineContext that still matters
MarsInitiative, courage, conflict and technical actionHouse ownership, discipline, aspects and current responsibilities
MercuryCommunication, analysis, study and tradeIts frequent solar proximity, sign, motion and supportive planets
JupiterJudgement, teaching, counsel and expansionDignity, houses ruled, aspects and practical experience
VenusRelationships, values, comfort and artSign, motion, 7th-house context and relationship choices
SaturnDuty, structure, patience and delayFunctional role, house, work demands and long-term timing

The Moon is interpreted through phase, waxing or waning strength and its relationship with the Sun rather than the same standard combustion rule. Rahu and Ketu are calculated lunar nodes and are also not normally assessed through ordinary planetary combustion.

Is a combust planet always weak?

No. “Strength” in Jyotish includes several different ideas. A planet can be close to the Sun yet occupy its own or exaltation sign, own helpful houses, receive supportive aspects or become prominent during its Dasha. It may deliver visible responsibilities while its personal significations feel less straightforward.

A planet can also be non-combust and still struggle because of debilitation, difficult ownership, poor placement or other pressure. The Neech Bhang guide shows why one condition never replaces full-chart assessment.

House ownership changes the meaning

The same combust planet will not act identically for every Ascendant. First identify which houses it rules. A planet connected with the 5th or 9th house may bring questions around learning, counsel, creativity or principles; one connected with the 6th, 8th or 12th may emphasize service, change, research, expenses or withdrawal.

Functional roles can even make a natural malefic highly constructive for certain Ascendants. See the Yogakaraka guide for the house-ownership method.

What if the combust planet is in its own or exaltation sign?

Good sign dignity can give the planet resources to express its agenda, while combustion can make that agenda tightly joined to the Sun. Both statements can be true. For example, the person may develop competence but prefer working behind the scenes, or receive responsibility before feeling personally recognised. Exact outcomes still depend on the houses involved and real circumstances.

Likewise, a combust debilitated planet should not be labelled permanently harmful. Check the dispositor, cancellation conditions, conjunctions, aspects and divisional charts before reaching a conclusion.

Combustion in Dasha and Antardasha

A natal condition becomes more relevant when the planet, the Sun, its dispositor or a closely connected planet operates in Dasha or Antardasha. The period may activate the houses the planet owns and occupies. Combustion describes how the planet may express; it does not by itself state exactly what will happen.

Use the Mahadasha and Antardasha guide to separate natal promise from timing. Transits should be read as triggers, not substitutes for the birth chart.

Combust Mercury and Venus need extra care

Mercury and Venus never travel very far from the Sun as seen from Earth, so solar proximity is common. This is why a simple “combust equals damaged” rule can produce exaggerated readings for many charts.

If relationship questions are central, read D1 together with the Navamsa D9 guide rather than predicting from Venus alone.

Common mistakes to avoid

Should you use a remedy?

A remedy should follow a careful chart assessment, not fear. Traditional practices such as prayer, disciplined conduct, charity or respectful mantra practice may be chosen for reflection and consistency. They should not be presented as guaranteed ways to change health, money, relationships or legal outcomes.

Gemstones can symbolically amplify a planet in traditional practice, so combustion alone is not enough reason to wear one. Review the Kundali-based gemstone guide before making a purchase.

A practical interpretation checklist

  1. Confirm accurate birth details and exact longitudes.
  2. Measure the smallest Sun-planet separation.
  3. State the combustion rule being used.
  4. Identify the planet’s Ascendant-specific house ownership.
  5. Check sign dignity, house, dispositor, aspects and conjunctions.
  6. Use D9 or other divisional charts only alongside D1.
  7. Connect the planet to the actual question and active Dasha.
  8. Describe possibilities and limits instead of guaranteed outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a combust planet in Vedic astrology?

A planet is called combust, or Asta, when it is very close to the Sun by longitude. Traditional interpretation treats the planet’s expression as less visible or more closely tied to solar themes, but the result depends on the whole Kundali.

Is a combust planet always weak or bad?

No. Combustion is one condition, not a complete verdict. Sign dignity, house ownership, exact distance from the Sun, aspects, conjunctions, divisional charts and Dasha timing can strengthen, redirect or complicate its results.

How do I check combustion in my Kundali?

Compare the exact zodiac longitude of the Sun and the planet, then measure their smallest angular separation. Use the combustion range followed by your astrologer or software because classical thresholds can vary by planet, motion and tradition.

Can the Moon, Rahu or Ketu be combust?

In standard Jyotish usage, combustion is mainly assessed for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn near the Sun. The Moon has its own phase and proximity framework, while Rahu and Ketu are not usually judged by the same combustion rule.

Does a combust planet need a gemstone or remedy?

Not automatically. A gemstone may amplify a planet and should not be chosen from combustion alone. First assess the planet’s functional role and the complete chart; simple reflective or devotional practices can be considered without fear or guaranteed claims.
