What is Nadi Dosha?
In the traditional Ashtakoota system, the Moon's birth Nakshatra is used to compare eight compatibility factors. Nadi is the highest-weighted of these factors. The 27 Nakshatras are grouped into three Nadis—commonly called Adi, Madhya and Antya. If both people fall in the same Nadi, the pair generally receives zero out of eight Nadi points.
This scoring rule is why a matching report may flag “Nadi Dosha.” But a zero in one Koota is not the same thing as a complete relationship diagnosis. Start with the Kundali Matching tool, then read our guide to Kundali matching beyond Guna Milan before drawing conclusions.
Why is Nadi given 8 points?
Traditional matching gives Nadi the largest share of the 36-point score. Classical interpretations connect it with constitutional compatibility and continuity of family life. Modern readers sometimes extend these ideas into strong claims about health, fertility or children. Those claims need care.
What are Adi, Madhya and Antya Nadi?
Each birth Nakshatra is assigned to one of three Nadi groups. Your Nakshatra depends on the Moon's sidereal longitude at birth, so accurate birth details matter. If you do not know your birth star, use the Nakshatra Calculator or read What Is My Nakshatra and Pada?.
Nadi classification is a matching input, not a personality label. Two people with the same Nadi can still differ substantially in temperament, communication, expectations and life circumstances.
Can Nadi Dosha be cancelled?
Traditional schools describe exceptions or Nadi Dosha Bhanga under particular combinations. The exact rules and the weight given to them can vary by lineage and matching method. Examples considered by some practitioners include differences involving Nakshatra/Pada, signs and their lords, as well as the overall strength and compatibility of the two horoscopes.
Because these rules are not applied identically by every tradition, it is better to verify the exact charts than to use a generic online “cancelled/not cancelled” claim. Acharya Dheeraj Parmar's profile explains the site's consultation approach.
Can you marry if Nadi Dosha is present?
Nadi Dosha should not automatically be treated as “do not marry.” A responsible compatibility review asks a wider set of questions. How are the 7th house and its lord placed in each chart? What does the Navamsa (D9) add? Are Venus, Jupiter and the Moon supportive in context? Do the relevant Mahadasha and Antardasha periods support the relationship stage?
Astrology is only one layer. Mutual respect, consent, communication, financial expectations, family boundaries, lifestyle, health information and shared plans are direct relationship factors and deserve equal or greater attention.
Is Nadi Dosha more important than the total Guna score?
Neither should be used alone. A total score compresses eight categories into one number and can hide why points were gained or lost. Conversely, focusing only on Nadi ignores the rest of Ashtakoota and both natal charts.
This is similar to Mangal Dosha: a label is only the beginning of interpretation. House placement, aspects, strength, cancellation conditions and the partner's chart can all change the context.
What should a complete marriage compatibility reading check?
- Accurate birth data and Moon Nakshatras for both people.
- All eight Ashtakoota factors, not only Nadi.
- The 7th house, 7th lord and relationship significators in both charts.
- Navamsa (D9) as a supporting divisional chart.
- Relevant dasha and transit periods for timing—not as guarantees.
- Repeated themes across both charts rather than one isolated placement.
- Real-world compatibility, consent, communication and practical plans.

Are remedies required for Nadi Dosha?
Not automatically. Traditional families may choose prayer, charity, mantra, puja or other customary practices, but remedies should never be sold through fear or presented as a guaranteed way to change health, fertility or relationship outcomes.
If remedies are culturally meaningful to you, first establish whether the matching concern actually remains after a complete chart review. Our Remedy Guidance page explains a personalised approach rather than prescribing the same remedy to everyone.
Frequently asked questions
What is Nadi Dosha in Kundali matching?
It is the common name used when two people receive zero Nadi points because their birth Nakshatras are assigned to the same Nadi in Ashtakoota matching.
Can people with Nadi Dosha marry?
Yes, the presence of Nadi Dosha alone is not enough to responsibly accept or reject a marriage. Traditional exceptions, the complete charts and real-life compatibility should be considered.
Does Nadi Dosha always cause childbirth or health problems?
No. Astrology cannot diagnose or guarantee medical or fertility outcomes. Use qualified medical advice for health, genetic or reproductive questions.
How many points is Nadi worth?
Nadi Koota carries a maximum of 8 points out of the 36 points in the Ashtakoota system.
Go beyond one Dosha or one score by examining both Kundalis, marriage houses, Navamsa and timing together.
